On March 19, 2016 Stage 2 of the new VicRoads Motorcycle Graduated Licensing System (M-GLS) commenced.  

Under the M-GLS, you must complete a standardised and compulsory 2 Day Learner Permit course

 

Ace training will offer the learner's permit course specifically designed to deliver the essential skills and knowledge for inexperienced riders under the new system.

You will learn the following:

 

  • Vital knowledge of motorcycle components and their use

  • Essentials of moving, turning and stopping the motorcycle

  • Critical skills for hazard avoidance including emergency braking and counter steering

  • Cornering techniques and the importance of advanced observation, cornering lines and throttle control

  • Theory principles relating to safe road riding (road craft and defensive riding techniques)

 

The Motorcycle Learner Permit  course will include off-road training range exercises as well as on-road training.

The on-road training and assessment will confirm that you have the necessary riding skills to control and manoeuvre a motorcycle safely in real traffic and on typical road conditions.

 

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

 

VicRoads requires the following for you to be eligible to complete the course and receive your learners permit:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Pass the Vicroads knowledge test of Victorian Rider Handbook

  • Pass the Vicroads Motorcycle Learner Permit Riding Test

  • Pay the applicable Vic Roads fees. Ace Training will collect these fees on behalf of VicRoads and you will be issued with a paper receipt.

  • Hold a current Victorian Driver's Licence; brought with you on the day of the course. If you don't hold a current Victorian Driver's Licence, you will be required to book in and pass a road law test at a VicRoads customer service centre.  

  • Obtain the Victorian Rider Handbook and study before the course. This handbook can be downloaded via the VicRoads link or website.

 

You MUST wear appropriate clothing including a long sleeve top, long pants, and fully enclosed shoes (either boots or runners) in order to have full skin cover. If you have your own motorcycle protective gear and you wish to use it please bring it with you.

 

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN MOTORCYCLE HELMET

 

COSTS: $500 per session 

Weekend Rates: $600.00 (if available)

Check Ride

Anyone who obtained their Learners Permit on or after April 2nd 2016 you will be required to complete a Check Ride prior to undertaking a motorcycle licence assessment.  If you obtained your Learners Permit prior to April 1st 2016 then you will not be required to complete a Check Ride (and will be eligible to undertake your motorcycle licence assessment after you have held your learners permit for a minimum of three months).

 

There is no minimum period after you have obtained your learners permit that you have to complete your Check Ride but you will need to successfully complete a Check Ride at least one month before the date of your motorcycle licence assessment. Ace Training suggests booking your check ride in on the same day of your Licence Assessment.

  

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

 

  • A current Victorian Motorcycle Learners Permit or VicRoads Learners Permit receipt which you must bring with you on the day of your Check Ride.  There is no minimum time that you need to hold your learners permit but you should not have held it for longer than 14 months at the time of your Check Ride as the Check Ride must be completed a month before your Motorcycle Licence Assessment. 

  • A current Victorian Drivers Licence card or Car Learner Permit card brought with you on the day of your Check Ride. 

  • You MUST wear appropriate clothing including a long sleeve top, long pants, and fully enclosed shoes (either boots or runners) in order to have full skin cover. If you have your own motorcycle protective gear and you wish to use it please bring it with you.

 

COSTS: $220 per session

Licence Assessment

Under the M-GLS, in order to obtain a motorcycle licence you must complete both an off-road and on-road assessment.  The off-road training range assessment will assess your ability to ride through curves, change paths, brake and ride slowly. The on-road assessment will be used to assess your observation skills, speed management, road positioning, application of road rules, and motorcycle control.

On-road training and assessment will confirm that you have the necessary riding skills to control and manoeuvre a motorcycle safely in real traffic and on typical road conditions.

Our course is designed to teach you all of the appropriate skills, rules and regulations that will ensure you are able to control your motorcycle, apply emergency braking, steering and cornering, possess advanced observation skills, and most importantly be a safe and skilled rider.

 

Pre-requisites & Entry Requirements

 

  • A current Victorian Motorcycle Learner's Permit; having held it for a minimum of 3 consecutive months but no longer than 15 months. This must be brought with you on the day of the course.

  • A current Check Ride Certificate of Completion.

 

You MUST wear appropriate clothing including a long sleeve top, long pants, and fully enclosed shoes (either boots or runners) in order to have full skin cover. If you have your own motorcycle protective gear and you wish to use it please bring it with you.

 

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN MOTORCYCLE HELMET

 

COSTS: $280 per test

 

Additional VicRoads Fees apply:

Depending on your licence type additional VicRoads fees will apply. Ace Training will collect these fees on behalf of VicRoads and you will be issued with a paper receipt. VicRoads should issue your licence within 6 weeks.
